Generative Ambient Experiments. Volume 1.

about

The sounds and processes herein stand as a kind of prelude to, and a practical starting point for my forthcoming LP. Experimental music, and ambient music aren't genres in which one can necessarily release a chart topping single to gain attention, and in this day and age an artist is almost required by some abstract media law to make their work available online in order to market themselves. I think of this as the first "single" on the way to more substantial releases that expand on and explore further into related territories.

During the first half 2017 I embarked on a series of experiments in generative ambient composition and surround sound mixing as part of my Honours project in fine art. This was also the beginning of my love affair with modular synthesis. My project and subsequent exegesis was an immersive journey into deep listening as an inadequate form of time travel through the nature of memory. The practical side involved multi-channel/spatial sound system configurations, (this work was originally presented as a 4.1 channel surround composition, here mixed down to stereo) and investigating the mechanics of drone and repetition as the tools for creating immersive sound environments and generating a sublime sense of timelessness. It is also worth stressing that this 34 minute track (the longest file this format of distribution allows) is merely an excerpt of an endless/infinite durational work, that was set up and presented over a 12 hour period.

Whether or not those things were real or successful isn't so important in the end. I'm happy to share the fruits of my labour. Enjoy this for now, there's more to come.
