Artificial Environment #1

about

Artificial Environment is a soundscape constructed from generative and improvised modular synthesiser processes, patched and performed live, and spatially remixed. The piece was originally conceived as a work for the cinema in 4.1 surround sound. However, it has no image, and no hierarchy of positioning. The piece also has no real beginning or end, only the frame of the moment that we spend listening. Here it is reimagined/remixed for stereo playback.

Imagination gives us power, and possibilities are only limited by what we can imagine. In this artificial environment I want the listener to imagine another world. I want us all to imagine better possibilities for this world.

Composed/produced by Justin Ashworth

Created for Starling Spatial Sound Collective's show The Space Beyond The Screen, October 21st 2023.

Cover image by Mat Blackwell.

This download contains a stereo mix of the work for regular listening, and additionally, it contains 4 mono files that represent the front L/R and rear L/R parts of the piece. The idea is that you can share these files with your friends, load them onto your phones, and each sync to a different speaker placed around a space. Then each press play on a different track at the same time to recreate the quadrophonic experience wherever you are. Put the playback on loop to have the positions shift as the work continues on.

Huge thanks to Lisa Rae Bartolomei for inviting me to contribute to the show, and to Matthew Barker for loaning me the extra speakers during the process of creation.
