This music was created in during September 2023 for Signals, a monthly ambient music series in Fitzroy.
Upon the invitation to play, I thought back to the generative ambient experiments I conducted during my time at uni, and about how returning to that process could be a way to step forward to something new. Whereas that process was R&D for the activity that led to Memories in Static, this could be research for new work.
Patching and decision making, the option to present the live work in a quadraphonic configuration came up, which further informed the patch. This also led to the idea that the performance could be entirely hands off, meaning that once the choices for the generative patch were made, the live presentation would happen without any further human influence.
For me, the idea of composition for modular synth is very much about choosing the right configuration of modules, and the focus is more on the process of patching than it is on traditional musical elements like melody, rhythm etc. Thinking about cycles, rates of change, and attenuating voltages to influence a slowly evolving but seemingly static form, while also thinking about where in space things are happening becomes the compositional focus. Melodically, I based everything around a tiny snippet of piano that I recorded during some practice for another project.
The patch was running for an hour or more behind the scenes before the performance started, and I began by gently turning the volume up. The patch was doing what it was doing, and I made no specific decision on where in the cycle of the many slow fluctuations and randomness to begin. Thus, this is what the audience got, and for better or worse, some aspects that were accounted for in the patching didn't happen, and that is fine with me. As with my other generative ambient releases, the moment captured for the audience is but a snapshot of an otherwise presumably endless work.
Finally, while the live presentation of the work was created to be quadraphonic, here it is mixed down to be enjoyed in good ol'fashioned stereo.
